  • First shoes! Normally we’d say go to a specialist shop for a measuring and fitting service but sadly that’s not going to be possible. Thanks to @theyesmummum for sharing our advice! Here’s more detail - First shoes are important for protecting feet and will help with stability but no shoes in the short term is going to be better than ill fitting shoes. So stick with bare feet, socks or soft soles as long as you can. If it’s wet or messy Crocs are a possible short term option. Parents often get them for early walkers for holidays and nursery schools quite like them for garden shoes. They’re not ideal as the fit is not secure. But they might fill a gap. Test them in the house - some early walkers can’t walk in them at all. - The other option is to resort to buying on-line - I can’t tell you how hard that is for a qualified shoe fitter to say! Order from brands that offer shoes specifically for first walkers. At Biff we mainly work with Start-rite, Bobux and Ricosta for our first shoe customers. They’re all good and well designed for first walkers but only Start-rite (or Clark’s) offer width fittings. Bobux fit well on medium to wide feet. Ricosta are good for a range of shapes slim to wide. Very wide will need an H fitting from Start-rite or Clark’s. Most toddlers have fairly wide feet - a G in Start-rite. It’s unusual for a toddler to have a very slim or E shaped foot. Good brands will give you advice on their sizing and do follow this. But we often find in the shop the size you end up in is not the same as the size measured. So might be best to give yourself some options by ordering the size measured and probably a 1/2 size bigger too. It’s really difficult to generalise but measures are only a guide and we find do tend to under rather than over estimate. And as a general rule T-bars or two velcro straps work much better than Mary Jane’s on toddlers. Mary Janes are often too tight across the top of the foot and don’t allow for as much adjustment to the fit. - Hope this helps, more to follow - do pop any other query below. #adviceforfirstshoes
  • Today we are in serious mode so here goes! I want to talk about shoe fitting. It’s amazing how long it takes to learn and how much practice you need with lots of different feet. The measuring gauge is just a guide. All shoes vary in depth and width even in the same brand. All feet vary. It’s an art rather than a science. So our advice, if you’re worried your child’s shoes might be getting small, is stick with a style you know and size up. If that’s not an option, talk to us and we will try and find something we know fits in a similar way. You might only have school shoes to go on we but we can use our knowledge to recommend something that should work. It’s not ideal but the best way to find the best shoe during this crisis. Some of you have asked about downloading a measure. In my experience this doesn’t work - it’s hard to measure if you don’t know how to interpret the gauge. And it’s just not an exact guide. First walkers with no shoe history are going to be very difficult right now. So I would advise keeping them bare foot as long as you can. If that’s not working get in touch.   • What’s easy to buy if you’re worried your kids shoes might be a little small whilst all the shoe shops are shut? 🤔 It’s a tricky one and lots of you have been emailing to ask our advice.One suggestion we have is Crocs. Normally recommended as a second pair for the garden, nursery, the beach, holidays etc right now we think they will work well as a good all rounder. 👍 They’re not really suited to extensive hikes, playground climbing, getting on and off trains, buses, tubes etc. But no one’s doing that for a while.😕 They’re also easier to fit than many shoes. Here’s the best way to test them out: With the back strap up, gently push the foot forward to check there’s some growing room. Approx half a cm for younger children and about a cm for older children is about right. If that looks ok try them on with the back strap securely down behind the heel. Get them to walk around and check they’re not slipping. They might look a little wide but that’s ok - they are a clog shape. Not great on a skinny foot but they do work well width wise on medium and wide feet. Just check they’re not tight across the top of the foot.
